Brunel’s SS Great Britain tells the incredible story of one of Britain’s greatest engineers and one of the most important ships in maritime history. In 1970, the SS Great Britain Project brought the rusting shell of the SS Great Britain home from the Falkland Islands, braving 8,000 miles of stormy sea, in an attempt to save it from ruin and keep its story alive. That ‘project’ became the SS Great Britain Trust, and today with your help, we continue to care for the ship and Brunel collections for the good of everybody, for all time.

About the Role

In the 54 years since the SS Great Britain returned to Bristol, the SS Great Britain Trust has taken forward the work of the pioneering volunteers who saved the ship, transforming a rusting hulk into one of the city’s leading visitor attractions and a groundbreaking story of maritime history and conservation.  We are rated as one of the top 10 museums in the UK, with over 80 staff, more than 150 volunteers and approximately 140,000 visitors per year.

The Trust is now looking for a Volunteer Officer to support the growth and development of the volunteer programme so that the SS Great Britain Trust has a diverse cohort of volunteers who are knowledgeable and motivated to support the delivery of the organisation’s strategy.

Volunteering is vital to the Trust not only because of the contribution volunteers make to the Trust’s strategic delivery, but also for the opportunities volunteering provides to engage with and connect people from the wider Bristol area.

The Volunteer Officer will be the first point of contact for those interested in volunteering at the SS Great Britain and will play a key role ensuring that the recruitment and induction journey is efficient, engaging, and transparent.
